New E-Board Members for 2011

Three changes were made to the Executive Board of Delaware Umpires Association for the 2011 season. Duane Hammond, who was already a member of the E-Board as Past President, was named as the new Softball Interpreter. He replaces Gus Rehnstrom, who retired and has moved to another state. Wayne Voshell is the new Secretary, replacing David Blades. Jon Beck replaces Sam Williams as the new Sussex County Representative.

David Blades resigned as Secretary to devote more time to his business. Sam Williams retired as an umpire, and will retire from teaching at the end of this school year. DUA thanks Mr. Blades, Mr. Williams and Mr. Rehnstrom for their years of valuable service to our association and we wish them well in their future endeavors.

Congratulations to Duane Hammond, Wayne Voshell and Jon Beck on their new positions.

DUA Mourns Passing of Past and Present Members

DUA members were saddened to hear of the recent passing of former member Harvey Williams and current umpire Milton Shiles.

Harvey Williams was a leading member of Delaware Umpires Association in the 1980s and 1990s. During his time with DUA, he served as President and also Treasurer. He was a radio announcer for many years, broadcasting local high school football and basketball games, as well as auto racing at Delaware tracks. He was the father of recently retired umpire Sam Williams. Mr. Williams, 83, passed away on February 28, after a brief illness.

Milton Shiles umpired softball in both Delaware and Maryland. Before becoming an umpire, he had a long and distinguished career as a pitcher in modified softball leagues across Delmarva. He played on a National ASA Championship team in 1989 and was inducted into the Maryland Softball Hall of Fame in 2009. Mr. Shiles, 58, died from injuries suffered in an auto accident on March 22.

DUA offers our condolences to their families. Both gentlemen will be greatly missed.
